WORK

ONLY PUBLICATION

Only Publication is the first student publication to come out of University for the Creative Arts. Initiated from a need to document the events of the Lab, an experimental project on space, the idea for the publication is a way of bringing together the different areas of the university. It is offering an insight to the working methods of visiting lectures plus publicising students work, thoughts and events.

The format of the publication itself is questioning the space and format of conventional magazine. The design is exploring the mechanics, size and form while challenging the space in which itself concerns. The content of the publication can be pulled out of its cover and opened as individual fold outs for each article. While going trough the content the design hides and reveals parts of text and images.

Production and contributions were all done as a collaborative project between a group students from UCA Epsom. Design and Art Direction by Justin Devon Moore and Mika Vaajoki.

DARYL KELLIE SHOWREEL

We were commissioned by Vaughn Talent to shoot a showreel showcasing the talent of their artist Daryl Kellie. Done in collaboration with James Devereaux-Ward and Justin Devon Moore.

MANIFESTO INSTALLATION

An extension of the Manifesto brief we were encouraged in our communities of practice to create a piece of work that related to our Manifesto and the ideas behind it. The concept was simple, what we created was an audio and corresponding visual of us discussing and disseminating what our community of practice is about and how we can create work for a project in such a large group of diverse practices.

The stop frame animation was created by using circles made out of coloured tissue paper laid down on a light table and then photographed frame by frame. Every circle represented one person inside the discussion and they reacted to the voice of that person when he/she was speaking. This visualisation demonstrates the relationship between the space and the participants and how each comment affects the conclusion of discussion.

SERIAL TRANSLATION OF MAKING DO

Designer Mary Ikoniadou from design studio Future Anecdotes came in to write a brief for a collaborative one day project focusing on translation. Our group decided to re-appropriate and reinterpret the original 'Making Do' magazine by dividing and splitting it between us.

Working with the material we had to adapt the pages we were given it in some way and then pass whatever we had done onto the next person, so that by the end everybody had worked on every section of the magazine creating a completely unique and individual publication of the original 'Making Do' magazine.

Here you can see the printed and bound magazine that has gone trough hands of seven person before attaining its final form.

EUROPE AS I KNOW IT

As our first brief for this semester we were due to visit three exhibitions/museums and make a critical response to the work seen. I managed to visit exhibitions Isotype and Shadow Cathers both at V&A and Eadweard Muybridge at Tate Britain.

As my response I tried to take something from each exhibitions visited and did this map. It represents my wiev of Europe. Darker areas on the map are the ones that I have actually spent most of my life or places that I have travelled to.

In a way it can be seen that the darker areas on the map are the parts of the world that I have left my marks on but especially the places that have left their marks on me as a person.

ANAGRAMS

There are 53 anagrams for Jan Tschichold's name. I used five of them.

I took a picture of Tschichold and cutted it to 13 pieces which is the amount of letters in his name. Then reorganised the shreds in to a same order as each of the anagrams to generate these visual anagrams.

OCTOBER

In typography 'Grids and no grids!' workshop we worked with Vaughan Oliver. The aim of the workshop was to develop your mark making and experimental typography, and explore grids and no grids within a calendar format.

The brief of the day asked us to forget what we think a calenders are supposed to look like and generate our own for one of the months. In collaboration with Justin Devon Moore and Lauren Gregory we were given October.

Based on the fact that October is the 10th month of the year we decided to use fingers with hand rendered dates on them. The name of the month placed on the image with simple sans-serif typeface to be contrast with the image.

SHAPES

Bauhaus inspired screen printed poster, size A3, edition of 10.

ANATOMY OF JAN TSCHICHOLD

Information founded about Typographer/Graphic Designer Jan Tschichold presented in a form of animation.

ELEPHANT

Section dividers designed with Urjuan Toosy and a group of other graphic design students from UCA Epsom under Vaughan Oliver's art direction for the 3rd issue of Elephant Magazine.

ABOUT

Hello,

I am a Graphic Design student originally from Finland studying BA Degree in University for The Creative Arts in Epsom, England. Before moving to Island State I gained experience in studies of Photography and Media Engineering.

My main goal is to develop myself as a visual communication practitioner. I'm interested in following and participating critical discussion to broaden my knowledge in various fields of design. I try to constantly search, smell, feel and taste the world to identify better who I am as a designer and find out what is it that I enjoy most of.

I have produced work to mirror my own interests, for setted briefs, for commercial purposes and private commissions. This website has been released to portray my work in all of its variations. Hope you'll enjoy your stay.
